Concrete
Although concrete is a much older technology than usually thought, developed by the Romans, it only started to be used extensively with respect of domestic dwellinghouse construction after the Second World War.
Concrete is a generic term that is used for a range of products which all broadly contain a binder plus aggregates and of course water.
Although lime and gypsum bound cements are more environmentally sound, the superior compressive strength offered by Portland cement makes it the better option for use in foundations.
It is preferred to source materials locally thus reducing the environmental impact of transportation. Logistically this is not always possible. If additional strength is required it is usually possible to procure recycled steel reinforcement.
